Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on February 14, recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance in many regions around the world. Stories associated with various Valentines connected to February 14 are presented such as the story of Saint Valentine of Rome who performed marriages for soldiers who were forbidden to marry.
The day first became associated with romantic love in the 14th century where women were courted. In the 18th century England, it evolved into the occasion to send flowers, candies, and cards known as “valentines”. In the 19th century, the hand written cards had all but faded to the commercialized printed greeting cards we know today.
Many students in USD 475 will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in their classrooms by traditionally trading valentines gifts with their classmates at the class parties.
Eisenhower Elementary celebrated by hosting their annual Valentines Day dance. Many parents, students, and staff danced the night away to music provided by James Russell, Director of Boys and Girls Club.
